Addio

Oh, no. Lorraine Hunt Lieberson has died. There are no words; go listen to her here or here instead.

What a colossal loss for the opera world! LHL’s voice made Handel’s music sound the way it was meant to, I’ve always felt. I figured I would get to see her in concert some day, just like I figure I’ll get to see a bunch of other opera singers in concert at some point in my life. So unfair for someone so young and at the height of her talent . . .

I know what you mean. I was hoping to see her in New York next year. It’s a tremendous loss.

Ohime! Now if only I had a copy of her Bach cantata album to fully grieve (if I can really dothat for a woman I never met, but greatly admired.)
Did you get a chance to listen to the Idomeneo with her today? I don’t really know the opera very well, so I couldn’t always distinguish her voice from the others, which I would have liked today.
Now (I suppose its tacky to say this), but if only the met would be so good as to hire Ewa Podles as her replacement in the Orfeo…

    I have no words.

Florence: yes, I did, and I couldn’t always tell, either. Did WTJU do anything else by way of tribute? I half-heard them saying something about further programming at the end of the broadcast, but I didn’t hear the details.

They did an all LHL program on their tuesday night vocal show. I caught part of it while driving to the supermarket that evening, though if I had known in advance I might have arranged to hear the whole thing. I turned on the radio to the middle of ich habe genug. The last aria in particular is so moving, particularly under the circumstances. Indeed, I came rather close to pulling out into a university bus.
Not that diva-worship should excuse reckless driving, but it was, of course, that good.
