Hypothetically…

Question for you, dear readers. Hypothetically, if you had to choose between

  • relocating to a largish city where you spent some of your earliest years, with which you still feel somewhat familiar, and which is near to a variety of family and friends; or
  • relocating to a smaller city you don’t know at all, in a
far-flung location, which would take you further from the people you
know, but the idea piqued your sense of adventure (fresh woods and
    pastures new and all that)…

…and you’d be there for around a year and a
half, and you felt you could be happy in either place — which would you choose?

(Yes, there’s a reason for this question, and yes, I’ll post about it soon.)

I recently had to make a relocation decision – largish somewhat familiar city, or rapidly growing even larger but stranger city. However, my decision was for a permanant relocation – so I chose the more familiar one, to be near family. However, if I were making the decision for a time-bound period, I think I would have gone with the adventurous choice and gone to the far-flung location.

I would say the smaller, far-flung place. Your family will still be around a year and a half from now, and you know what, if you don’t like it, you’re not signing your life away – if you’re unhappy, you can come back sooner 🙂

Go for the new. You can always come home to the old.

Family and friends, no question. Add to it the city size and it’s even more definite.

Option B. For me, going (back) to a place I kind of knew would likely discourage me in some measure from doing and seeing all I could, tending to lean on the familiar.
Always had luck with doing the new-new. The new-old will be there.

Unless the second location’s position were tremendously less stable than the first locations, I would certainly go for that. More to tell later on. I’m a sucker for new pastures myself.

Depends. Which is closer to where I live?
